Postmodernism takes this concept of questioning traditional structures, representations and expectations and pushes things a step further.

Roland Barthes released his essay The Death of the Author. In it, he challenged tradition when he said that a writer’s opinions, intentions or interpretation of their own work are no more valid than anyone else’s.

Metatextuality is where a text draws attention to the fact that it is a text. It points to the process of its own creation.

Postmodernism links to media representations and reality by arguing that the media no longer simply reflects the real world, but instead constructs a new reality where the distinction between the two is blurred or non existent.

Combining established film genres like road movie and social realism and combining them to create a new meaning but also the typical road movie has an established end goal but in the music video there is'nt which relates to the social contexts at the time as they're finding something to do

Road movie - the majority of the video is set in a car 

Social realism - showcasing a working class narrative which matches the lyrics

strinati - breaking of time and space - they travel from 1889 and end up in 2019

            - style over substance - celeb cameo , flamboyant outfits

Intertextual references - has typical conventions of a western e.g the Boots Horses Setting

In the music video , The girl in '2019' does TikTok dances which also reflects the hype on social media about the song with various memes and dances being created 



10) What do YOU think Lil Nas X was trying to say about reality and American culture in the music video for Old Town Road?

I think he was showcasing various parts of American culture by having themes of both a western and Hip-hop 
and also showcasing diversity in the western/country genre especially with the yeehaw agenda which highlighted the underrepresentation of BAME in westerns
