marxism and hegemony

1) Re-read the Mail Online review of Capital. Why does it suggest that Capital features a left-wing ideology?
the demonization of the bankers and the immigrant characters where more likeable more than the white british characters
2) Choose three quotes from the review that are particularly critical of Capital and paste them into your blogpost. Do you agree with the criticisms? Why?
Capital started with an intriguing idea - i agree as the plot with the mysterious man was very intriguing
The residents were bemused, but not scared - i agree as there wasn't much fear from the residents
The hardest worker on the street was an illegal immigrant- agree she worked even though she didnt need to

3) What scenes or characters from Capital could be read as promoting left-wing ideology?

the bankers were seen as the villain and there was an emphasis on diversity

4) What about the other side of the argument - are there any aspects of Capital that reinforce right-wing or capitalist viewpoints?
proprety is still desired suggesting money and status is still important

5) What does Marxism suggest regarding power in society?
power lies with the bourgeoise and exploits the proleriats

6) Why is The Apprentice a good example of the media reinforcing capitalist values and ideologies?
the whole point of the show is to make money and profit

7) Come up with two examples of media texts (e.g. TV programmes, newspapers etc.) that either fetishise working class life (e.g. EastEnders presents quite a harmonious East End community which probably doesn't accurately reflect East London life) or demonise working class life or poor people (e.g. The Daily Mail and The Sun newspapers regularly demonise people living on benefits with headlines referring to 'scroungers'.) Explain what meanings these texts communicate to their audiences.

a) Fight Club – Glorifies anti-corporate rage and blue-collar masculinity through underground violence and stripped-down living.
Peaky Blinders – Romanticizes post-WWI working-class gang life through sleek fashion and cool violence

b)The Jeremy Kyle Show – Often showcased working-class guests in sensationalized conflict, reinforcing stereotypes of dysfunction.

The Sun - Frequently criticized for “benefits scrounger” narratives.

8) how many of the bullet points apply to Capital? Does Capital reinforce or challenge the values of capitalism

Capital challenges the values of capitalism as it portrays the bankers negatively and idolizes the humble working class characters also the relationship between the rich banker and his wife who seems to be with him only for the money is uncomfortable to watch and the working class Muslim family dynamic comes across more natural and real
